Congratulations to Marion MacLean – Renison University College’s Field Instructor of the Year
Family Counselling and Support Services for Guelph-Wellington is proud to announce that Marion MacLean, Community Justice Lead, was nominated and awarded the Field Instructor Award for 2017. Two interns from FCSSGW nominated Marion, who was then chosen by the Practicum Committee based on her commitment to field education with the School of Social Work, consistent positive evaluations by the students, and having provided creative enhancement, exceptional field education, and support to students.
FCSSGW has an incredible team of therapists who are qualified as instructors. Our interns are supported by the entire agency, ensuring they are supported as they gain valuable practical experience. Our interns continually go above and beyond, adding so much to the agency’s contribution to the well-being and resilience of our community. We are honoured our interns chose to nominate Marion and recognize her for achievement.
Breaking Free – Better Choices = Better Relationships

Our agency does an extensive amount of work in the area of violence against women and children for residents of Guelph and Wellington County, in partnership with the Ministry of Community and Social Services and other Family Service agencies across Ontario. Our vision is a world where there is no more violence against women and children. For that to happen however, we must drill down to the root of the problem. We must break the cycle of abuse and violence that began in the homes of so many teens, so that they learn to make better choices for themselves.
FCSSGW has created a unique program for both male and female youth between the ages of 12 and 17, who have been abused or have witnessed abuse in the home and are heading down the same path in their lives – acting out with aggression, bullying and violence, both in the home and at school. The eight week Breaking Free program, offered to youth who are at high-risk of using violence and abuse, teaches healthy, appropriate strategies for managing stress and resolving conflict.
The students who graduate from this program work as peers for others and are extremely passionate about the program and the facilitators. They know they are being heard, respected and are learning alternative methods to bullying and violence – and they demonstrate these new behaviours on a daily basis. Parents and teachers are champions of the program as they see the great results.
